PARIS: Paris has seen many historic moments, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games added another unforgettable one. On Friday, 26 July, the Opening Ceremony took place in a unique setting: the River Seine. For the first time in Olympics history, the ceremony was held outside a stadium.
The sight was incredible: 85 boats carrying 6,800 athletes floated along the Seine towards the glittering Eiffel Tower. The Olympic flame was lit on a cauldron attached to a hot air balloon, ascending into the sky. Paris turned into a giant sports arena, with the river as the track and the quays as spectator stands. The city’s landmarks stood witness to a vibrant celebration full of flags, feathers, and raindrops.
Artistic director Thomas Jolly crafted a four-hour spectacle that invited everyone to join in. Athletes danced on boat decks despite the rain, spectators lined the quays and bridges, ballet dancers performed on rooftops, and Parisians cheered from their balconies. Delegations from 205 National Olympic Committees paraded through the heart of Paris, heading towards the Trocadero. There, French President Emmanuel Macron declared the Paris Olympic Games open.

Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, spoke to the crowd. “Some may say we in the Olympic world are dreamers, but we are not the only ones,” he said. “Our dream is coming true tonight. Olympians from around the globe are showing us what greatness humans are capable of. So I invite everyone: dream with us. Like the Olympic athletes, be inspired by the joy that only sport can give. Let’s celebrate the Olympic spirit of living life in peace, united in all our diversity.”
The night was a beautiful display of unity and celebration, one that Paris and the world will remember for years to come.
