DUBAI: Under the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced the launch of the Dubai Photography Museum. This ambitious project aims to celebrate the art of photography while enhancing Dubai’s reputation as a global cultural hub.
The museum will highlight both local and international talent, offering interactive spaces and exhibitions that explore the history and evolution of photography. It aims to inspire creativity, foster dialogue, and contribute to the UAE’s creative economy. Her Highness emphasised that the museum will preserve photography’s cultural legacy, providing educational experiences and promoting cultural tourism.
A collaborative initiative between Dubai Culture and the private sector, the museum aligns with Dubai’s strategic plans, including the Dubai Urban Master Plan 2040. It seeks to promote visual documentation of Dubai’s story on a global scale and strengthen the city’s position as a cultural capital.
The global photography market is projected to reach $62.4 billion by 2027, underscoring the significance of this initiative in boosting cultural industries and job creation. The museum will also support talent by hosting permanent and temporary exhibitions, workshops, and educational programmes, creating a vibrant space for creative exchange.
To further enrich the project, Dubai Culture will launch a global architectural competition in 2025, offering a prize of AED1 million. The winning design will feature dedicated spaces for exhibitions, interactive children’s areas, lecture halls, photography labs, and retail and dining facilities, ensuring an immersive visitor experience.
The Dubai Photography Museum will attract international photographers and cultural institutions, enhancing collaboration and fostering innovation. With this initiative, Dubai aims to cement its status as a leading destination for arts, culture, and creativity.
