ABU DHABI: Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, the Secretary-General of the World Council of Churches (WCC), recently sent a big congratulations to the Muslim Council of Elders and its Chairman, His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, on their tenth anniversary.
Rev. Pillay pointed out how the Muslim Council of Elders has been amazing at spreading the values of tolerance, human fraternity, and peaceful coexistence around the world.
In a letter to Judge Mohamed Abdelsalam, Secretary-General of the Muslim Council of Elders, Rev. Pillay talked about how the council was founded at a tough time when extremist views and the misuse of religion for political gain were becoming more common. This, he said, made the council’s work even more important.
He praised the council for being a beacon of hope and a platform that truly represents Islam’s real values of peace, love, justice, and respect. The council has been great at spreading these values, challenging wrong ideas, and promoting conversations among different communities.
Rev. Pillay also spoke about the strong relationship between the World Council of Churches and the Muslim Council of Elders. He said, “Our joint efforts have really strengthened the bonds between our communities and shown a united front against violence and division. As we celebrate this milestone, we look back on our shared journey with pride. The World Council of Churches is honoured to stand alongside the Muslim Council of Elders, advocating for a world that embraces diversity, values every individual, and strives for reconciliation and unity. We aim to enhance the role of religions in spreading hope, love, and peace.”
