ZEE5 Global’s Kammattam, inspired by Kerala’s Thrissur scams, premieres September 5, bringing a gritty Malayalam crime drama to viewers worldwide.
KOCHI: When truth feels stranger than fiction, stories rooted in reality can cut deep — and that’s the premise of Kammattam, ZEE5 Global’s latest Malayalam original series. Inspired by Kerala’s infamous Thrissur cooperative bank scandal, the six-part crime drama debuts worldwide on 5 September, coinciding with Onam celebrations.
Rather than a direct retelling, Kammattam takes creative liberty to explore the emotional and ethical fallout of financial betrayal. At its heart lies a story of broken trust, raising hard questions about how systems built to protect communities can be misused for exploitation.
The production itself mirrors the raw urgency of the story. Shot in just 11 days across 40 real-world locations, the series avoids polished sets in favour of authentic backdrops — from crowded cooperative offices to bustling street corners. This deliberate choice enhances the realism, making the narrative feel immediate and unsettlingly familiar to Kerala audiences.
Sudev Nair takes on the central role of Circle Inspector Antonio George, portraying a man caught in moral quicksand rather than a stereotypical hero or villain. His layered performance anchors the tense narrative, while director Shan Thulasidharan steers the series with restraint, relying on atmosphere and character depth over melodrama.
Tight pacing, naturalistic settings, and unflinching storytelling make Kammattam a standout in Malayalam streaming content. By blending the intensity of a crime thriller with the weight of a moral drama, the show promises to resonate with viewers both in Kerala and globally.
Kammattam streams exclusively on ZEE5 Global from 5 September.
