Note to Influencers: Travellers face stricter train luggage rules in India, as Indian Railways introduces airport-style weighing and charges for excess baggage.
NEW DELHI: For travellers planning to explore India by rail, there’s a new travel rule to note: Indian Railways is tightening its train luggage rules, making the experience a little more like flying. Soon, your suitcase may have to pass through an electronic weighing machine before you board, and yes—extra weight could cost you.
The new rules are rolling out first at major stations including Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Kanpur, and Aligarh Junction. Just like airports, travellers will have free baggage allowances depending on their ticket class. Cross that limit, and you’ll pay charges starting from ₹30, calculated at 1.5 times the ‘L’ scale.
Families travelling with kids aged 5–12 get half the adult allowance, up to 50 kg. But oversized bags, even if light, may still attract extra fees since Railways calculates size as well as weight. The formula is simple: every 28 cubic decimetres equals 4 kg.
If your bags are only slightly over, you’ll be charged the standard rate. But big excesses or bulky items like scooters and cycles will attract penalties. Officials say the rules aren’t new, but enforcement is stricter to ease congestion and improve safety.
| Class | Maximum limit (kgs) | Free Allowance (Maximum Limit) | Marginal Allowance for Luggage |
| AC First Class | 150 | 70 kgs | 15 kgs |
| AC 2-Tier Sleeper/First Class | 100 | 50 kgs | 10 kgs |
| AC 3-Tier Sleeper/AC Chair Car | 40 | 40 kgs | 10 kgs |
| Sleeper Class (Exp/Ordinary) | 80 | 40 kgs | 10 kgs |
| Second Class (Exp/Ordinary) | 70 | 35 kgs | 10 kgs |
For international travellers used to airline-style baggage checks, the adjustment may feel familiar. The advice is simple: pack light, travel smart, and avoid surprises at the station. With India’s trains being one of the best ways to experience the country, following the train luggage rules will make the journey smoother—and lighter on your wallet.
