ABU DHABI: The much-anticipated Zayed National Museum, the UAE’s official national museum, is slated to open its doors in December 2025 within the Saadiyat Cultural District, a global hub of artistic and cultural institutions. The museum stands as a tribute to the Founding Father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, celebrating his enduring legacy, values and vision for the nation.
The museum is designed to be more than a space for preservation—it will be a dynamic centre of learning and cultural exchange. Through a series of immersive exhibitions, public programmes and cutting-edge research initiatives, the museum aims to inspire a deeper understanding of the UAE’s heritage while offering a modern narrative of national identity, compassion and unity. Its permanent collection includes artefacts from across the Emirates, alongside international loans and community contributions that highlight the country’s diverse cultural fabric.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, remarked that the museum represents the next chapter in the UAE’s cultural journey. He described it as a space where the story of the nation is shared not only through objects, but through emotion, memory and forward-looking vision.
Architecturally, the museum is a marvel designed by Pritzker Prize-winner Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners. Its iconic silhouette features five soaring steel structures inspired by the wings of a falcon in flight, honouring falconry as a vital element of Emirati heritage. The design also incorporates sustainable technologies, ensuring harmony with both tradition and environment.
Visitors will be able to explore treasures such as the Abu Dhabi Pearl, one of the world’s oldest natural pearls, the Blue Qur’an, and a replica of a Magan Boat built through the museum’s research partnerships. Ancient artefacts from the Palaeolithic to Iron Age will illustrate the ingenuity of early UAE societies, from early copper mining to advanced irrigation systems.
As part of the Saadiyat Cultural District, the Zayed National Museum will sit alongside world-renowned institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s role as a leading global cultural destination. The museum also promises inclusive access for youth, People of Determination, and seniors, setting a new benchmark for cultural outreach and education in the region.
