The inaugural Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship begins today in Al Ain, bringing together elite athletes from over 20 countries for a three-day combat sports spectacle.

Al Ain: The inaugural Abu Dhabi World Grappling Championship officially gets underway today, August 1, at ADNEC Centre Al Ain. Organised by International Vision Sports Management (IVSM), the three-day global tournament will run until August 3, attracting hundreds of elite athletes from over 20 countries.

The event is held in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT) under the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) banner. The tournament marks a milestone in combat sports for the Middle East and North Africa region and strengthens Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a hub for global sporting events.

At Thursday’s pre-tournament press conference, Saeed Al Dhaheri, Director of Destination Management at DCT, highlighted the event’s impact: “Hosting this championship reflects our commitment to sports tourism and our vision to make the Al Ain Region a centre for international combat sports. Grappling is one of the fastest-growing disciplines worldwide, and this event showcases our readiness to lead.”

General Manager of IVSM, Tareq Al Bahri, assured that preparations were complete for a seamless, high-calibre experience. He noted that Abu Dhabi’s strategic investments in combat sports are creating long-term platforms for global athletes. He also announced that top male and female performers from this championship and the AJP Grappling World Tour will qualify for the prestigious Abu Dhabi Extreme Championship 2026.

The championship opens with professional and 35+ matches, followed by youth and amateur bouts on day two. Finals and bronze playoffs take place on day three. Winners will earn 2,000 AJP ranking points and significant cash prizes.
