Carrefour has closed in Jordan, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait, with Majid Al Futtaim rebranding stores under new HyperMax retail chain.
DUBAI: In a major regional retail shift, Carrefour has officially closed operations in Jordan, Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait, with its stores rebranded under Majid Al Futtaim’s new chain, HyperMax. Carrefour exits four Gulf countries as Majid Al Futtaim launches HyperMax chain, reflecting financial pressures and evolving consumer demand in the sector.
Majid Al Futtaim, which brought Carrefour to the Middle East in 1995, confirmed that the move does not affect operations in the UAE, where the brand remains one of the leading supermarket chains.
According to company statements, HyperMax is being positioned as a new-generation hypermarket brand, tailored to meet changing shopping habits and price sensitivities. The shift allows the group to restructure its retail offering across selected markets, while maintaining its strong presence in the UAE and other countries where Carrefour continues to operate.
The rebranding marks a new chapter in the region’s competitive supermarket industry, where customer demand for value-driven retail has accelerated in recent years. While Carrefour exits four Gulf countries as Majid Al Futtaim launches HyperMax chain, UAE customers can expect continued Carrefour operations with no changes announced.
Industry analysts note that the retail transformation reflects broader market trends, as retailers across the GCC adapt to tighter spending, increasing competition, and the rise of digital shopping channels.
