Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group at the UN, Qatar said Syria’s unity and stability are crucial for regional security and long-term peace.

NEW YORK: Qatar has stressed the importance of Syria’s stability as a cornerstone of Arab and regional security in a statement delivered on behalf of the Arab Group at the United Nations.

During the UN Security Council’s monthly briefing on the Middle East and the Syrian Arab Republic, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, said Syria is undergoing a critical phase marked by security, humanitarian, economic, and developmental challenges that weigh heavily on its citizens and institutions.

She underlined that preserving Syria’s unity and national institutions is essential to prevent regional destabilisation, fight terrorism, and block the resurgence of extremist groups. While acknowledging national efforts to confront these challenges, Sheikha Alya emphasised that international support is needed to advance recovery and reconstruction, which would positively impact both Syria and the wider region.

The Arab Group reiterated the importance of consolidating national unity, strengthening state institutions, and moving forward in a comprehensive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process with broad participation. Such steps, it noted, would protect citizens’ rights, enhance national reconciliation, and promote social peace and transitional justice.

Sheikha Alya also highlighted the Arab Group’s support for recent steps by the Syrian government toward reconciliation and its cooperation with the international community and the UN system. She stressed that the UN’s continued role is vital in supporting national efforts for peace and stability.

The statement reaffirmed the Arab Group’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity while rejecting any external interference, attempts to impose illegal realities on the ground, or efforts to fragment the country. It also voiced deep concern over acts of violence threatening security and stability inside Syria.
