Abu Dhabi: Doctors at Madinat Zayed Hospital (MZH) battled to save a man’s life for nine hours after the 30-year-old patient suffered a severe head injury following a major car collision. The hospital, a multi-specialty facility, is part of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), a subsidiary of the largest healthcare platform in the Middle East, PureHealth.
The patient was first received in the ICU under the care of Dr Mostafa ElShahat, emergency medicine specialist at MZH. The initial focus of doctors was managing oxygen levels and circulation to restore normal breathing, with Dr ElShahat’s team working to ensure that a stable, healthy state of blood flow and pressure were maintained.
Once stabilised, the patient was taken to the operating theatre. The neurosurgery team, led by Dr Mohamed Mahmoud Khanchour, Specialist Physician, then began the intricate procedure with a craniectomy to remove the frontal bone from the skull and protect the brain from accident fragments.
The patient then received maxillofacial surgery under the care of Dr Zakaria Ahmad Mohamed, Specialist Physician , to repair fractures surrounding the eyes, specifically on the forehead and cheekbones, which require careful medical attention to ensure proper healing and prevent complications such as nerve damage, infection or permanent disfigurement.
An expert team provided anaesthetic care during the surgery, which lasted from 10.30pm through to 7.30am. Despite the long duration of the operation, the team remained focused and driven throughout the complex operation to ensure its success.

Their expertise and capabilities are aligned with SEHA’s world-class care standards and the excellence we pursue to save lives.”
