ABU DHABI: Abu Dhabi has expanded its autonomous taxi operations to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands, furthering the city’s drive to become a global leader in AI-powered mobility. The initiative, led by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) in collaboration with WeRide, Uber, and local operator Tawasul Transport, is part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council’s strategic roadmap.
The two new destinations—vibrant hubs of commercial and residential activity—were chosen due to their complex traffic environments and demand for efficient transport. This expansion comes on the heels of successful operations on Yas and Saadiyat Islands, as well as Zayed International Airport, and signifies nearly half of the city’s core areas now covered by autonomous vehicles.
The move supports Abu Dhabi’s smart transport strategy, which targets 25 percent of all urban journeys to be powered by smart mobility by 2040. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are being integrated into daily life, offering residents and visitors a glimpse into the future of transport. These self-driving taxis are available via the Uber app and have already shown strong engagement since their December 2024 launch.
Officials say the expansion will improve transport safety, reduce congestion, and offer sustainable alternatives to traditional commuting. Dr Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli, Acting Director-General of the Integrated Transport Centre, noted the milestone reflects Abu Dhabi’s long-term commitment to smarter, safer urban living.
WeRide’s Jennifer Li highlighted the technical complexity of the new routes, adding that Abu Dhabi now hosts the firm’s largest international AV fleet outside the US and China. Uber’s regional head for autonomous mobility, Mohamad Jardaneh, called 2025 a turning point for AVs, noting strong public interest and uptake.
With a fleet of 44 autonomous vehicles and strategic partnerships with Space42, Uber, and WeRide, Abu Dhabi is the first city in the MENA region to commercialise self-driving cars, reinforcing its global reputation for innovation in sustainable transport.
