DP World welcomed MV Höegh Sunrise, the world’s most eco-friendly vehicle carrier, to Jebel Ali Port, highlighting Dubai’s green shipping leadership.
DUBAI: Jebel Ali Port has marked a major milestone in sustainable maritime trade as DP World welcomed the maiden call of the MV Höegh Sunrise, the world’s greenest and largest vehicle carrier.
The Aurora-class vessel is the first automotive ship in the industry built with a zero-carbon ready design. It is capable of running on alternative future fuels such as ammonia and methanol, setting a new benchmark for deep-sea sustainable logistics. The ship can carry up to 9,100 vehicles and reduces carbon emissions per car transported by 58 percent compared to current standards.
Arriving from Europe with 1,200 vehicles, the MV Höegh Sunrise was received at Jebel Ali with a commemorative plaque ceremony. The event was attended by senior representatives from DP World and Höegh Autoliners, including Ahmed Badri, VP General Cargo & RoRo, and Atanu Maiti, Regional Head at Höegh Autoliners.
DP World GCC CEO Abdulla Bin Damithan praised the ship as a breakthrough in green logistics. “The Höegh Sunrise is a leader in sustainable shipping and her arrival reinforces Dubai’s role as a global hub for the automotive industry,” he said.
Höegh Autoliners CEO Andreas Enger added that the Aurora-class ships are central to decarbonising the shipping sector. “Jebel Ali is a vital partner in delivering carbon-efficient logistics to our clients worldwide,” he said.
In 2024, DP World handled 1.3 million vehicles in Dubai—a 53.6% year-on-year increase—demonstrating its growing role in global car trade. The operator is also building the world’s largest auto market and recently launched a 2.6 million sq ft vehicle yard at Terminal 4.
