An Indian woman in Dubai, Anamika Rana, has stirred controversy online after posting a video complaining about her maid’s behaviour. In the video, Rana expressed frustration over her house help “slouching on the sofa and using [her] phone,” explaining that she caught the incident on camera. She sought advice from her followers, asking, “How would you react?”
“So I just caught my maid on camera. She was literally slouching… and kind of like chilling on her phone,” Rana said in the clip. She added, “I know a lot of you might think, ‘So what is the big deal?’ See, I am a millennial, and perhaps my maid is a Gen Z, and we both are from different generations. Also, I am not very pro at maid handling.” Rana admitted her uncertainty about “what boundary to set.”
The video triggered an avalanche of criticism. Many viewers expressed outrage, questioning why Rana had an issue with her maid’s actions. One commenter asked, “Why can’t she sit on the sofa?” Another wrote, “Our maid sits with us on the sofa and has breakfast sometimes. We don’t like to discriminate based on jobs or social status.”
Others shared advice on setting boundaries. One person said, “Sitting on the sofa is okay but slouching… is a no no. You can try saying ‘humlog nahi karte toh aap bhi mat karo.’” Another added, “Sometimes the more lenient we are with help, the more they take us for granted. Strict boundaries are always good.”
Rana, described as a “financial nerd” on Instagram, has 153 followers on her personal page but runs a professional account, “CA Anamika Rana,” with over 1.5 lakh followers. Her post continues to spark heated debates about domestic worker treatment and household dynamics.
