Jane Goodall bee sanctuary at Expo City Dubai highlights pollinator conservation and sustainable biodiversity efforts.
DUBAI: Expo City Dubai welcomed a landmark addition today with the opening of Jane Goodall’s Pollinator Garden at Terra, the sustainability hub. The ecological sanctuary, named after the world-renowned conservationist, celebrates biodiversity and pollinator preservation.
The garden is part of the 100 Hives, 100 Schools initiative, which aims to install beehives in 100 schools across the UAE. This programme provides students with hands-on lessons about the crucial role of pollinators in sustaining ecosystems.
“This garden is a symbol of shared responsibility for a sustainable future,” said Marjan Faraidooni, Chief of Education and Culture at Expo City Dubai. “It aligns with Dubai’s leadership in conservation and highlights the importance of bees in maintaining ecological balance.”
The garden’s journey began in 2019 with the discovery of 2,000 native Apis mellifera bees at Terra. Partnering with the Beekeepers Foundation, the colony has flourished, now hosting over 30,000 bees across two thriving hives. The hives are integrated into a pollinator-friendly ecosystem featuring native plants that attract bees, butterflies, and birds.
Dr Jane Goodall, present at the inauguration, said, “This garden embodies the essential connection between humans and nature. Bees are unsung heroes, and this sanctuary will raise public awareness about their importance.”
The sanctuary also strengthens the collaboration between Terra and Roots & Shoots UAE, aiming to inspire the next generation to champion sustainability.
Pollinator Garden Highlights:
• Two hives with over 30,000 native bees
• Features native plants supporting pollinators
• A haven for local wildlife, including bees, butterflies, and birds
Through this initiative, Expo City Dubai reinforces its commitment to fostering biodiversity and engaging communities in environmental stewardship.
