Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid delivers message marking 80 years of the United Nations, urging renewed commitment to peace and cooperation.
DUBAI: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, marked the 80th anniversary of the United Nations with a recorded message highlighting the organisation’s enduring relevance and the need for renewed global unity.
In his address, Sheikh Mohammed reflected on the UN’s founding principles and their continuing importance in today’s complex global environment. “We stand today at a historic moment as we commemorate eighty years since the founding of the United Nations,” he said. “Yet, the world faces complex global challenges, reaffirming the urgent need, now more than ever, to revive the principles and values enshrined in the UN Charter.”
The UAE, since its inception, has pursued a foreign policy rooted in dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. Sheikh Mohammed noted that the country remains committed to humanitarian aid, countering terrorism, and promoting global peace. “The UAE continues to play an active role in delivering humanitarian assistance, combating terrorism, and countering hate speech and extremism,” he added.
He emphasised the founding purpose of the UN as a guardian of peace, justice, and human dignity. “Today, it carries the responsibility to renew its pledge to humanity,” he said. “Its continued vitality and effectiveness remain the hope of mankind for the next eighty years.”
The UAE joined the United Nations in 1971, shortly after its formation, and has since been an active participant in its missions, including serving as a member of the UN Security Council in 1986–1987 and again in 2022–2023.
Established in 1945 following World War II, the United Nations now includes 193 Member States and continues to serve as a platform for promoting peace, sustainable development, and human rights across the globe.
