Sharjah has amended its vehicle law, allowing unclaimed impounded cars to be auctioned after three months of non-collection.

SHARJAH: Got a car sitting in impound? You may want to move fast. The Sharjah Executive Council (SEC) has approved new rules allowing unclaimed impounded vehicles to be auctioned after just three months.

If your car ever gets impounded in Sharjah, you now have just three months to claim it back — otherwise, it could be sold at a public auction. The Sharjah Executive Council has updated the law so that unclaimed vehicles, whether seized for traffic violations or criminal cases, can be disposed of after 90 days. A special committee will organise auctions for these cars once accident files are closed or court rulings are issued, helping clear impound lots faster and keeping the system more efficient.

The decision was announced during the SEC’s regular meeting on Tuesday at the Sharjah Ruler’s Office, chaired by H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of the SEC. Also in attendance were H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi and H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Rulers of Sharjah and Vice Chairmen of the SEC.

According to the decision, the Committee for the Disposal of Impounded Vehicles will handle the auctions in coordination with the Public Prosecution. The auctions will apply to vehicles seized due to traffic violations or criminal cases, three months after accident files are closed or judicial rulings are issued.

Officials say the move aims to streamline government processes, clear impound lots more efficiently, and reinforce Sharjah’s broader vision of effective governance and sustainable community development.
