ABU DHABI: To mark World Pneumonia Day, the United Arab Emirates joined the global Pneumolight Campaign, highlighting the fight against pneumonia—a leading cause of death for children under five. In a symbolic gesture, prominent UAE landmarks were illuminated in blue, aligning with 362 monuments in 38 countries to raise awareness and promote action against this preventable disease.

The UAE’s participation underscores the need to prioritise pneumonia on the global health agenda, particularly in vulnerable communities. Dr. Maha Barakat, Assistant Minister for Medical Affairs and Life Sciences, expressed the UAE’s commitment: “Our participation in the Pneumolight Campaign reaffirms our dedication to combating pneumonia. As we light up our landmarks, we stand in solidarity with the international community, working towards a world where no child dies from preventable pneumonia.”

Dr. Catia Cillóniz, Coordinator of the Pneumolight Campaign, noted that pneumonia awareness is essential for prevention, as it remains a treatable and preventable illness.

The UAE has consistently led global humanitarian efforts in health, collaborating with organisations like WHO, UNICEF, and the Red Cross. These partnerships aim to improve health systems, increase vaccine access, and promote awareness of preventable diseases such as pneumonia. Through the Global Action Plan for Pneumonia and Diarrhoea, the UAE supports coordinated efforts across governments, private sectors, and civil society to reduce child mortality from pneumonia.

By participating in the Pneumolight Campaign, the UAE reinforces its commitment to global health equity and a world where pneumonia and other preventable diseases are tackled through collective action and sustained commitment.
