STOCKHOLM: The 2024 Nobel prizes are announced this week, starting with the award for medicine or physiology on Monday.
The awards, which are also given for achievements in physics, chemistry, literature and peace, come with a prize amount of 11 million Swedish crowns ($1.1 million) while the recognition alone can spur book sales and yield global fame.

The Nobel Prize was created by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who in his will dictated that his estate should be used to fund “prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind”.
Two US scientists win Nobel Prize in Medicine for microRNA discovery
US scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun have won this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine for the discovery of microRNA, a new class of tiny RNA molecules that play a crucial role in gene regulation, Sweden’s Karolinska Institute announced on Monday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.
“This year’s Nobel Prize honours two scientists for their discovery of a fundamental principle governing how gene activity is regulated,” the institute said in a press release.

“Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun were interested in how different cell types develop.” Their “groundbreaking” discovery of microRNA revealed “a completely new principle of gene regulation that turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms, including humans.”
