Austria confirms it will not join NATO, maintaining its neutral status while offering support for peace efforts in Ukraine.
VIENNA: Austria has officially reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality, stating that it has no intention of joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), despite ongoing regional tensions and the evolving European security landscape.
The Austria NATO neutrality stance was clarified by both the Austrian Foreign Ministry and Defence Minister Claudia Tanner, who emphasised that neutrality remains a cornerstone of the country’s defence and foreign policy. The statement comes amid broader discussions in Europe regarding military alliances and national security following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Minister Tanner firmly stated that Austria will not allow itself to be subjected to external pressure or blackmail and will continue to protect its sovereignty while adhering to its independent path in global affairs. She added that the topic of joining NATO “is not on the table.”
Austria has also reiterated its support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine, encouraging diplomatic dialogue and expressing readiness to host negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. The government noted its ongoing humanitarian support and advocacy for a just and comprehensive peace process in the region.
The Austria NATO neutrality stance reflects a historical tradition of military non-alignment dating back to the Austrian State Treaty of 1955. This status has allowed the country to act as a bridge in international diplomacy and peace-building, particularly in Europe and the Middle East.
By upholding neutrality, Austria aims to continue serving as a host for key international organisations, maintain credibility in global mediation, and strengthen its independent security strategy.
