China’s express delivery volume exceeded 150 billion parcels, hitting the milestone 37 days earlier than in 2024, signalling strong consumer demand.

BEIJING: China’s logistics sector marked a major milestone over the weekend, with express delivery volumes crossing 150 billion parcels for 2025—achieved 37 days earlier than the same period last year. The data, released by the State Post Bureau, highlights the growing strength of the country’s consumer market and the ongoing momentum in its digital and retail economy.

The milestone reflects rapid modernisation of China’s nationwide logistics infrastructure, including standardised construction of municipal sorting centres, county distribution hubs, and township-level service stations—particularly in central and western regions. Provinces such as Shaanxi, Xinjiang, and Qinghai recorded year-on-year growth rates exceeding 30% in parcel volumes, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Driven by tech innovations and public-private infrastructure initiatives, the China express delivery boom is backed by over 1,300 large-scale processing centres, 400 logistics parks, and 420,000 village-level delivery service points—ensuring near-total urban and rural coverage.

In parallel, thousands of unmanned delivery vehicles and more than 300 drones have joined the fleet, delivering nearly 3 million packages across remote regions. Analysts credit this surge to a resilient logistics network and China’s ongoing investments in smart delivery solutions.

From January to August 2025, total retail sales reached 32.39 trillion yuan ($4.54 trillion), up 4.6% year-on-year. Online retail saw even faster growth, jumping 9.6% to 9.98 trillion yuan, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Meanwhile, the China Logistics and Purchasing Federation reported that the logistics market index rose to 51.2 in September, signalling ongoing expansion.

The China express delivery boom not only reinforces the health of domestic consumption but also showcases the country’s ability to scale logistics innovation and coverage nationwide—placing it firmly at the forefront of global e-commerce fulfilment.
