What is Ariha Shah case all about?
Ariha’s story is quite heart-wrenching. Bhavesh and Dhara Shah, originally from Gujarat, moved to Berlin in 2018. They welcomed their daughter, Ariha, in 2021. However, when Ariha was just seven months old, she suffered an accidental injury. After they took her to the hospital, German authorities suspected it could be a case of sexual assault, which led to Ariha being placed in the custody of the Jugendamt, Germany’s Youth Welfare Office. Sadly, her parents could only visit her once every two weeks.
Despite no formal charges being filed against them, the German authorities accused the Shahs of negligence, which complicated matters further. The Indian government has been advocating for Ariha’s return, stressing how crucial it is for her to be raised in her own cultural, linguistic, and social environment. The ongoing situation has created some friction between India and Germany, especially since German authorities have filed a civil custody case to terminate the Shahs’ parental rights.

The Indian government is firm in its belief that Ariha should be with her parents, and Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has highlighted these concerns, emphasizing the importance of her growing up in a familiar environment. This case continues to evolve, and the hope is that a resolution can be reached soon for little Ariha.
