DUBLIN: Ireland’s big pitch to pay people up to $100,000 to move to its remote islands got the world talking last year. But fast forward to now, and let’s just say the results haven’t quite matched the hype. The “Our Living Islands” scheme was meant to revive island life—but it’s seen only a trickle of interest so far.

Launched in June 2023, the programme offers grants of up to €84,000 to anyone willing to restore a vacant home and move permanently to one of 23 stunning but isolated Irish islands. From Arranmore to Inishbofin, these spots are rugged, quiet and beautiful—but not exactly bustling with takers. Since its launch, just 29 people applied, and 20 of those applications have been approved.

On paper, the idea is a win-win: give new life to abandoned homes, grow island communities, and offer a dream lifestyle. But in reality? Most would-be applicants hit a wall pretty fast. The grant is tied to serious conditions. You have to already own a home on one of the islands, live in it full-time, and manage all the renovation costs and paperwork yourself.

And then there’s the not-so-glamorous side of island life: rough weather, fewer amenities, and limited transport. The thought of waking up to ocean views is appealing—until you realise it takes two ferries and a hike to reach the nearest big supermarket.

Still, for some, the trade-off is worth it. The peaceful pace, tight-knit community and breathtaking scenery continue to pull in people seeking a change. The scheme runs until 2033, so there’s still plenty of time for more brave souls to sign up.

So yes, a few did show up—but clearly, living the island dream takes more than a grant and a good Instagram caption.
