Starting December, Microsoft Teams will use Wi-Fi to figure out if you’re working from the office or somewhere else — helping teams sync better.
SEATTLE: Microsoft is rolling out a new update to Teams this December that might just make the “Where are you working from today?” question a thing of the past. The platform will now be able to automatically detect your location when you connect to your company’s Wi-Fi network.
The idea? Help hybrid teams stay on the same page. If you’re in the office, Teams will tag you as “Working from Office – [Location]”, and if you’re remote, it’ll keep things status quo. It’s all part of Microsoft’s bigger plan to make hybrid work a little less chaotic.
This update will rely on your company’s registered Wi-Fi networks. Once you connect, Teams gives you a heads-up and lets you confirm before tagging your status. So no, it won’t track your every move — just whether you’re on an approved network or not.
Of course, the feature is optional, and companies can decide whether or not to enable it. Microsoft says the goal is to make life easier, not creepier. Still, it’s sparked a few conversations around privacy in the workplace, especially as more tools lean on automation and AI.
This location feature joins other hybrid-friendly Teams updates like smart scheduling and hot-desking tools — all designed to make juggling office and remote work feel a bit more seamless.
Whether it’s helpful or a little too Big Brother for your taste might depend on your company’s vibe. But if you’re tired of letting everyone know where you are all the time, this might just do the trick.
