Shanghai’s airports and cruise ports recorded over 3.67 million cross‑border passenger trips in July, up 11.8% year-on-year, and cruise travel surged with a 56% increase through July—highlighting a booming summer travel season.
SHANGHAI: Shanghai’s summer travel season is heating up fast, with Shanghai cross-border travel surging across both aviation and maritime gateways. In July alone, the city’s airports and ports handled more than 3.67 million cross‑border passenger trips, marking an 11.8% increase year-on-year.
At Pudong International Airport’s Terminal 2, departure halls were abuzz with holidaying families and returning overseas students, heading to destinations like Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America. In response to high traffic demand, Pudong’s customs implemented tech and equipment upgrades—now allowing ordinary passengers to clear customs in about five minutes post-luggage collection.
The Shanghai cross-border travel boom isn’t limited to air traffic. Shanghai’s cruise ports also experienced a major upswing: from January to July, they handled 381 cruise ship calls and facilitated 1.191 million passenger trips—year-on-year increases of 62.8% and 56% respectively.
These figures underline a massive rebound in both air and sea mobility for Shanghai, reinforcing its status as a major global travel hub as the city moves into the peak tourism period.
