TAIPEI: Taiwan has announced a bold new initiative titled the “Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects,” with an ambitious goal of boosting the economy by more than T$15 trillion (US$510 billion) by the year 2040. The plan, unveiled by Premier Cho Jung-tai, marks a significant national commitment to cement Taiwan’s role as a global powerhouse in artificial intelligence.

In a social media statement, the Premier declared Taiwan’s vision to become a “smart technology island,” tapping into the country’s already world-class semiconductor and information and communications technology (ICT) sectors. The initiative is expected to create over 500,000 jobs and establish three world-leading AI research laboratories, reinforcing Taiwan’s position in future digital industries.

The roadmap focuses on three core technologies: silicon photonics, quantum technology, and AI robotics. These areas are expected to spearhead advancements that will revolutionise industries and attract global investment.

Taiwan’s AI strategy is built upon its strengths in chip manufacturing, with companies like TSMC playing a crucial role in global tech supply chains. By integrating AI innovation with hardware expertise, the island seeks to lead in sectors ranging from smart manufacturing to advanced healthcare.

Beyond economic growth, the initiative aims to reshape Taiwan’s digital infrastructure, boost tech exports, and raise the island’s profile in international AI research. The plan aligns with a broader vision to ensure the country’s competitiveness in an increasingly AI-driven global economy.

The government is also working to build strategic partnerships with international academic and tech institutions to foster research and innovation. Taiwan’s approach to AI development is set to balance economic impact with ethical AI principles and global cooperation.
