Trump urged Israel to stop bombing Gaza after Hamas accepted parts of a US peace plan, signalling hope for new Gaza peace talks.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Friday called on Israel to immediately halt its bombing campaign in Gaza, following Hamas’ positive response to a US-backed peace proposal. Trump said the group’s reaction showed a willingness for “lasting peace” and urged both sides to focus on securing the release of hostages.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump said, “Hamas’ reply signals readiness for peace. Israel should immediately stop the bombing of Gaza so we can get the hostages out safely and quickly. Right now, it’s far too dangerous to do that.” He added that discussions had already begun to finalise the details, emphasising, “This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long-sought peace in the Middle East.”

Earlier in the day, Hamas announced its readiness to accept parts of Trump’s ceasefire and hostage-exchange plan, which involves releasing all captives, both living and deceased. The group said this release would depend on “the necessary field conditions” and expressed willingness to continue negotiations through mediators to settle the finer points.

In a notable shift, Hamas also said it was open to handing over administration of Gaza to a Palestinian body of independent technocrats, formed through national consensus and supported by Arab and Islamic nations. This development could pave the way for renewed Palestinian unity and stability in the region.

Trump’s latest move marks one of the strongest US efforts yet to push for an end to the nearly two-year Gaza war. Analysts say Hamas’ response, though cautious, may present a genuine opportunity to reopen peace discussions and work towards a lasting regional settlement.
