DEWA and Emirates Marine Environmental Group plant over 13,000 mangrove trees, support marine biodiversity, and clear plastic waste at Jebel Ali.

Dubai: The DEWA mangrove plantation initiative has resulted in the planting of 13,350 mangrove trees at the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, thanks to a two-year collaboration between Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG). This green effort spanned 10 events held between February 2023 and February 2025.

Over 1,650 volunteers—comprising DEWA employees, their families, subsidiary staff, and students from DEWA Academy—dedicated 3,626 hours to environmental service. Their collective actions were not limited to tree planting; they also removed 3,546 kilogrammes of primarily plastic waste and cleared eight tonnes of algae and seaweed from the sanctuary’s beach, boosting the health of the coastal ecosystem.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, highlighted the organisation’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and climate action. “Driven by our social responsibility, we have been launching campaigns and initiatives to encourage employees and community members to plant more trees and support nature-based climate solutions,” he said.

Al Tayer also emphasised the importance of inter-sectoral cooperation. “We collaborate with government and private sectors to increase green spaces, especially with native trees like mangroves, which absorb carbon and greenhouse gases at approximately four times the rate of tropical forests,” he added.

This initiative contributes directly to UAE’s climate goals, enhances biodiversity, and supports the preservation of marine and terrestrial habitats. It reflects DEWA’s broader sustainability vision aligned with national environmental strategies, and reinforces the significance of corporate-led community participation in ecological restoration.

The Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary, recognised for its rich biodiversity, continues to benefit from such restoration efforts—ensuring a cleaner, greener future for the UAE’s coastal regions.
