NEW DELHI: India’s mass campaign to increase the country’s green cover has reached a significant milestone with the planting of over one billion saplings in less than six months. This achievement is part of a broader effort to enhance the country’s tree density and promote environmental sustainability.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all participants and encouraged more people to plant trees in honour of their mothers, contributing to a healthier planet. The Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change highlighted the milestone, noting that more than 1 billion saplings had been planted as part of the campaign, which has been embraced with great enthusiasm across the nation.
Launched on World Environment Day (June 5th), the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign aims to plant 1.4 billion saplings — a number reflecting India’s population. With one billion saplings planted in just under six months, the campaign is on track to exceed its target. The term “Mother” in the campaign symbolically refers to Mother Earth, encouraging people to nurture and protect the environment.
