Amazon has officially launched its AI-powered shopping chatbot assistant, named “Rufus,” to all U.S. customers through the Amazon mobile app, the company announced on Friday. Rufus resides at the bottom right of the app’s main navigation bar, offering help with product searches, comparisons, and personalized recommendations.
Initially tested in beta with select U.S. customers, Rufus has now been rolled out to all users following extensive testing with millions of queries. Trained on Amazon’s vast product database, customer reviews, and community Q&As, Rufus uses a sophisticated language model specialized for shopping.
Users can ask Rufus a variety of questions related to products, such as guidance on buying decisions, product comparisons, and insights gleaned from customer reviews and expert analyses. For example, queries like “What should I consider when buying headphones?” or “What are the latest tech trends?” are handled adeptly by Rufus.
During testing, customers found Rufus helpful not only for product inquiries but also for tracking past orders or checking the status of current ones. The AI assistant also provided insights beyond specific products; for instance, when asked about a pool umbrella for Florida, Rufus offered information on Florida’s weather and humidity.
Rufus encourages interaction through conversational prompts, allowing users to explore related questions and topics within the chat interface. This feature helps guide customers through their queries, enhancing the overall shopping experience.
