ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre (ADPHC), in partnership with M42, has launched a liquid biopsy test for colorectal cancer. This non-invasive, blood-based screening enhances Abu Dhabi’s health sector by promoting early detection and preventive care while complementing the gold-standard colonoscopy. The test identifies tumours or precancerous growths, improving early risk stratification and treatment outcomes.

Dr. Ahmed AlKhazraji, Acting Director General of ADPHC, highlighted the test’s importance, stating it provides a more comfortable and accessible screening option. He emphasised that this innovation aligns with Abu Dhabi’s commitment to precision healthcare and preventative measures, aiming to make regular screenings a community standard.

Part of the IFHAS comprehensive health screening programme, the liquid biopsy is now available at healthcare centres operated by Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) and M42 in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Al Dhafra region. Dr. Fahed Al Marzooqi, Deputy COO of M42, noted that this step would increase early detection rates, especially for a cancer type that remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths.

Colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer in Abu Dhabi, predominantly affects males. Recent data from 2023 shows 67% of new cases were diagnosed at advanced stages, significantly reducing survival rates. The introduction of liquid biopsy aims to change this by encouraging more residents over 40, as recommended by Abu Dhabi’s health authorities, to participate in regular screenings.

This initiative reflects Abu Dhabi’s strategic focus on leveraging innovative technologies to improve population health, reduce barriers to early cancer detection, and foster better health outcomes for the UAE community.
