MYMENSINGH: Bangladesh authorities have clarified that a recently demolished colonial-era building in the city was never associated with the family of iconic filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Officials explained the building was originally constructed by a local landlord and has no historical link to Ray’s ancestral roots.
The property, located beside Shashi Lodge, was previously used for administrative purposes before being abandoned due to disrepair. Following an official decision, the structure was demolished for safety reasons and will be replaced with a more durable public-use facility. The site was never classified as a protected heritage monument.
Archival records and statements from cultural historians have confirmed that the demolished building did not belong to Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury or any of Satyajit Ray’s family members. The actual family home, located in another part of the district, was sold years ago and no longer retains its original structure.
The clarification comes after public concern and speculation about the erasure of cultural heritage. Authorities emphasised the need for factual accuracy and reassured that Bangladesh remains committed to safeguarding genuine heritage properties. The demolition, they said, was carried out transparently and lawfully with safety as the primary concern.
Government officials have urged the media and public to avoid spreading unverified claims. The Ministry of Culture reiterated its role in upholding historical integrity while progressing with necessary urban development projects.
