Dubai’s RTA has completed upgrades to Old Souq and Al Sabkha marine transport stations, boosting rider comfort and preserving heritage.

DUBAI: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has wrapped up the final development phase of its Dubai Creek stations upgrade, officially inaugurating the newly modernised Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha marine transport stations.

Part of RTA’s Marine Transport Strategic Plan 2020–2030, the project aims to enhance mobility, improve passenger experience, and preserve the city’s cultural identity. The upgrades mirror earlier improvements made at Bur Dubai and Old Deira Souq stations, focusing on comfort, accessibility, and heritage preservation.

Enhancements include a 50% expansion of shaded waiting areas, new retail outlets for abra riders, and improved facilities that meet Dubai’s Code for People of Determination. Sustainable materials were used in the construction, while lighting and berth design were upgraded to ensure efficiency and eco-friendliness.

For abra operators, the project introduced air-conditioned rest areas, offering a more comfortable working environment and boosting operational efficiency. Both stations were developed simultaneously to accelerate delivery and optimise resources.

Marine transport remains a vital part of Dubai’s mobility ecosystem, with abra and ferry trips reaching 9.7 million passengers in the first half of 2025 alone. The RTA said the new stations mark a milestone in Dubai’s broader plan to blend heritage charm with modern infrastructure while ensuring safe, reliable, and sustainable travel across the Creek.
