GAZA CITY: Since May 27, at least 1,373 Palestinians have been killed while trying to get food, the UN Human Rights Office in Palestine (OHCHR) reported. Out of these, 859 were killed near Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites, while 514 lost their lives along food convoy routes.
This grim toll continues to rise even after Israel announced daily military pauses on July 27, supposedly to improve humanitarian access in western Gaza. However, OHCHR stated that Israeli forces have continued their attacks on people gathering along convoy routes and near GHF aid distribution sites.
The OHCHR press release, issued Friday, highlighted that they had no information suggesting these victims were involved in hostilities or posed any threat to Israeli forces. “Each person killed or injured had been desperately struggling for survival, not only for themselves, but also for their families and dependents,” the OHCHR noted.
Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that the situation in Gaza is catastrophic, with food supplies running dangerously low. Despite international calls for safe passage of aid, attacks on aid routes have persisted, worsening the crisis for civilians.
The UN has urged Israel to ensure protection for civilians and aid operations, warning that continued targeting of humanitarian convoys could amount to violations of international law. With famine looming, the global community faces growing pressure to act decisively to stop further loss of innocent lives.
