India and China have agreed to restart direct flights after four years and strengthen trade and investment ties.
NEW DELHI: India and China have agreed to resume direct flights for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, marking a significant step in efforts to normalise bilateral relations. The decision came following two days of talks in New Delhi between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
Direct flights between the two countries were suspended in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, disrupting travel for business, education, and tourism. With the new agreement, both governments have pledged to restart air connectivity while also exploring additional routes to meet rising demand. The move is part of a broader effort to rebuild confidence and expand engagement between the neighbouring nations.
Alongside restoring air links, India and China also reaffirmed their commitment to increase trade and investment flows. Both sides acknowledged the importance of stable economic cooperation and agreed to identify new areas of collaboration in technology, manufacturing, and supply chain integration. Analysts say the resumption of flights will help boost business partnerships, ease student travel, and support the wider trade agenda.
The talks were part of the 24th round of meetings between the two countries, aimed at addressing both security and economic priorities. Officials on both sides highlighted that improved people-to-people connectivity could complement ongoing trade discussions and encourage stronger ties. The resumption of flights is expected to begin in phases, with airlines from both countries working closely with regulators.
Observers view the announcement as a symbolic yet practical step towards normalisation. The reopening of skies after four years is not just a travel development but also a signal of willingness to strengthen cooperation. India and China now look ahead to further discussions that could shape the next phase of their economic and diplomatic engagement.
