Today, Instagram turns 14! Since it first launched in 2010, this app has completely changed the way we communicate with photos and videos, becoming one of the biggest social media platforms in the world with over a billion users.
Instagram was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger as a simple photo-sharing app. The idea was to make it easy for people to share everyday moments, but with a focus on creativity. The app quickly took off, especially because it had filters that allowed users to enhance their photos with just a tap. By 2012, Instagram had become so popular that Facebook bought it for $1 billion.

One of Instagram’s major turning points was the introduction of Stories in 2016. Inspired by Snapchat, Stories let users post photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. This feature quickly became a hit, and soon, everyone was using Stories to share real-time moments with their followers. It also paved the way for fun tools like GIFs, stickers, and filters that users now love to play with.
Another big innovation was the launch of IGTV in 2018, which allowed users to upload longer videos. Though not as popular as Stories, it was a step towards Instagram becoming more video-friendly. Then came Reels in 2020, Instagram’s response to TikTok, letting users create and share short, fun videos with music and effects. Reels gave Instagram a fresh new vibe, especially among younger users.

Over the years, Instagram has also focused on shopping, making it easier for businesses to sell directly through the app. Today, it’s more than just a photo-sharing platform; it’s a space for creators, influencers, businesses, and everyday users to connect, create, and share. Happy 14th birthday, Instagram!
